It's a great honor for Green Lung to be invited to conduct a Tobacco Control Workshop in conjunction with 10th Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium in Jogyakarta, Indonesia in last July 2011.

More than 40 participants from various regions in Asia Pacific including Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand etc had joined us in the workshop. The workshop aimed to share and raise the awareness of the tobacco-free environment.

This was indeed a great experience for Green Lung to be able to spread our messages across the borders to reach more and more communities not only in Malaysia but also the neighboring regions.

We strongly believe that having tobacco-free environment is not merely a dream if one day everyone starts talking about it.

Again we would like to stress that we do not dislike smokers, we just disagree with their acts. We try our best to help them as they fell prey to the NASTY cigarettes.

The first ever Youth Tobacco Control Conference and Carnival organized by Green Lung in collaboration with the Clearinghouse for Smoke-free Melaka in World Heritage City - Melaka!

This time we are to sidetrack from the orthodox image of anti-tobacco campaign.
We are talking no more about smoking cessation (whereby we believe more people can do much more better than us), but about the interest of the majority - non-smokers.

It's not surprising to know that 1 out of 5 people in the world is a smoker, but what we are more concerned with is the fact that if one smokes around 4 non-smokers, 5 of them experience the similar disastrous effects from sinful cigarettes.

But what do we normally do when someone smokes around us? Stay silent. Take it as if nothing happens?
Normal reactions i suppose.

Now this is the issue.

We (non-smokers) share the common air space with the smokers. When they claim their rights to smoke in the public places, we should be the ones who stand up for our rights!

3 simple steps you could do to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Stay away from the smokers when they smoke.
We do not discriminate them, it should always be our instinct to protect ourselves
Ask the smokers not to smoke in front of you in a polite way.
They would be more than willing to accept your idea if you talk in the right way.
Spread and share this with your friends
i.e. share this note and suggest the page to your friends. So that when you act, you are not alone. And believe me or not, you would see the difference.

A total of 3 representatives from Green Lung had attended the event held at the auditorium of HUKM in Cheras on the 27th to 28th November 2010.

On the 28th November, our Green Lung President, Mr Koay Khang Siean had presented about Green Lung and we are proud to say that his presentation had actually sparked off much interest and attention among the audiences. We had gained a lot of positive feedbacks from some other NGOs leaders.

Instead of stressing on "ANTI-tobacco", Green Lung emphasizes on positive influences by creating a sustained effort in promoting a SMOKE-FREE environment. The positive image we're proposing has also gained some positive feedback from leaders of other NGOs.

This event has indeed been an eye-opener for Green Lung and Green Lung is definitely looking forward towards future collaborations with both government agencies and also the NGOs in effort of fighting for a smoke-free environment.
In Green Lung, we believe that even a little effort can create a huge change. A little support from each of us is able to make a great transformation.
Together, we can make the environment greener and smoke-free!

Twice the brand of Green Lung had been presented to the world community in Seoul.

8th Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium (APPS), July 2010

APPS is the most prestigious event of IPSF-APRO gathering more than 150 pharmacy students from various countries in Asia Pacific region including S.Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Thailand etc. This was also the second time where IPSF-APRO met Green Lung officially since Green Lung Carnival in February this year.
I'd been given a slot to present Green Lung to the participants. The presentation I suppose turned out great. A few representatives from Indonesia, India and Japan did approach me and showed their interest in working with Green Lung in the future.

4th Global Conference for Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC), October 2010

AFHC is an international summit, in which over 2200 participants representing 91 cities and organizations from 17 countries converged at COEX to discuss on eight key topics including building healthier cities, such as ubiquitous healthy cities, health impact assessment and healthy settings.

Green Lung had participated in the poster session under the category "Healthy setting". For your information, most of the participants are city planners, municipal officers, lecturers, researchers etc. And guess what, we are the only student representatives attending the conference. We were to highlight the roles of youths in supporting and creating a healthy environment. Youths could play their parts.

* He is an excellent Speaker & Activist for Experience in Youth Entrepreneurship, Experience-Linked Professional and also a Leadership Development Advisor.
* Recently he toured around IPTAs to share his stories with the youths
* He delivered Malaysian youth voice in One Young World Congress.
* He launched a new project on behalf of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008 in New Zealand.

Freshly in our mind, i suppose, the first day we held our offices,
The first question we asked, "What should we do?"
the offices were empty; no files; no records.
yeah, we began from zero!
But we share a vision.
and it's the vision that drove us together to accomplish a mission.
We couldn't say we are hero today,
yet not a single one of us would expect to see where we are standing today.

the path was once vague and from time to time, we redefine ourselves throughout the way.
We cheered for every success we'd made;

Memorandum of Understanding-IPSF-Green Lung

In conjunction with Green Lung Carnival 2010, Green Lung has successfully fostered a collaboration with International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation (IPSF)

Background of IPSF

IPSF is the leading international advocacy organization of pharmacy students promoting improved public health through provision of information, education and professional activities. IPSF's aim is to offer pharmacy profession worldwide, including in socially and medically neglected areas. Since establishment in 1949, IPSF now represents more than 350,000 pharmacy students and recent graduates in 84 countries worldwide.
IPSF-APRO is Asia Pacific Regional Office for IPSF.

The objective of this Memorandum is to provide the framework for the collaboration between Green Lung and IPSF to create and promote the smoke-free initiatives and tobacco control campaigns among the communities in IPSF through experience sharing and technical assistance.

Statements of Collaboration
1.Green Lung shall be the IPSF-APRO Collaborating Centre and Clearinghouse for Tobacco Control in Asia Pacific region.
2.Green Lung shall be committed to collecting, analyzing, organizing and disseminating the reliable and evidence-based information pertaining to tobacco use and tobacco control campaigns.
3.Green Lung shall be willing to share their experience and ideas with any youth tobacco control organizations within Asia Pacific region in hope of expanding the network and increasing the working leverages.
4.Green Lung shall be willing to share their experience and ideas as well as deliver the know-how to any party within Asia Pacific region who wishes to set up a youth tobacco control organization or to organize a tobacco control campaign wherever possible in hope of building the youth capacity for tobacco control in Asia Pacific region.
5.IPSF-APRO shall be coordinating and regulating the tobacco control campaigns and activities within Asia Pacific region.
6.IPSF-APRO shall be assisting in linking up the youth tobacco control organizations within Asia Pacific region including Green Lung to establish a network for tobacco control in Asia Pacific.

With this, hopefully that IPSF and Green Lung would work more closely together to create more smoke-free environments in Asia Pacific region and disseminate the information regarding the tobacco product use among the public.

On 22^nd January, if you were observant enough, you might see a few eccentric human beings wearing glove, wandering around as if they were looking for something on floor. They looked like doing some cleaning works, yet when they saw the litters on the floor, they just ignored them.

Who they are? And what on earth were they doing?

Yes! They’re the Green Lung inspection teams who are on a mission of collecting the cigarette butts found in USM campus.

You may ask. “What for?” For collection purposes or yeah, it’s our hobby anyway? The reason why we did so is simple. We wanna know to what extent USM has been doing to protect her beloved sons and daughters from the evil cigarette smoke.

Now another question pops into your mind. “So what? Cigarette butts mean nothing.”

So if there are cigarette butts, there are smokers.

Again, you may question. “But these cigarette butts may be left by the outsiders (especially those contractors whom you can see so many now in USM)? It may not be doing with our students.”

Smokers just threw the packs into the bush.

Hello? So you mean that outsiders can smoke in our campus in the actual fact that under the Food Act 1983, Control for Tobacco Control Regulation 2004, ALL higher learning institutes (yeah, including USM) are smoke-fee areas. So this suggests that a lot of improvements are needed to control the flow of smokers coming in to USM. And this is not the end of the story! Yes, our students do contribute to this too! And EVEN our Pegawai Keselamatan! Wow, amazing…

You're caught red-handed

We found a lot of cigarette butts

The followings are our major and interesting findings which we’d love to share with you:

Total cigarette butts found = 9364

Total smokers found smoking at the time of inspection = 23

None of the zones in USM is smoke-free zone

The worst zone…tada! RST Complex. Restu male hostel is currently the leading one among all with 650 cigarette butts. (Fantastic record!)

You might be waiting for this.

A total of 444 cigarette butts with 26 cigarette boxes and 1 smoker found at Jabatan Keselamatan. How to overcome? We don’t know too.

The participants were exposed to various screening counters using marketplace method. All of us were taught the correct technique to use peak flow meter, CO tester, conduct Fagestrom Test, and learn the principle of SidePak.

Each group would go around USM campus to approach smokers...

Action 1: Provide them advice and info and encourage them to quit smoking.

Action 2: Distribute out our leaflets to them. Let them know the help available including quit smoking clinics and smoking cessation hotline.

Action 3: Collect cigarettes from them to show that they are READY to quit smoking.

Birth of Green Lung

GREEN LUNG: " Hi, everyone!! Nice to meet you ~ I suppose now most of you have known who I am, right? I think you must be interested to know where and when I was brought about in USM."
Ladies and gentlemen, here how the story goes.

Prof. Rahmat from Pusat Racun Negara (PRN) :" We can have a student voluntary group to campaign for this issue (to support a smoke free environment in USM)."

Dedicated Green Lung member 1:" Yeah, it's a good idea!! We hope to have a smoke-free USM."

Few days later, surprisingly there was a LARGE number of pharmacy students who are so passionate towards this programme.

40 voluntary members were chosen.

Capacity Building Workshop: Creating Tobacco
Control Youth Leaders among the Undergraduate
Students Phase I funded by WHO.

After few discussions with PRN, Capacity Building Workshop was organized to create tobacco control youth leaders, funded by World Health Organization.

A Step Today

After 4 months of efforts and hard works,
Finally we've taken our very first step in pursuit of a 100% tobacco-free environment in USM:

"2009 Green Lung Awareness Campaign"

Venue: Convocation Exhibition Site, Eureka, USM
Date: 11th - 16th August 2009
Time: 9am - 5pm

We are to tell the whole USM that our campus is an absolute smoke-free zone. No exception.

Our official kick-start of Green Lung's Project.

Officiated by Vice Chancellor of USM, Prof. Tan Sri Dato' Dzulkifli Abd Razak

Former director of National Poison Centre, Prof Rahmat signed a petition against tobacco
(p/s: Green Lung Project is under the guidance of Clearinghouse for Tobacco Control (C-TOB), National Poison Centre aka PRN)

Prof. Rahmat struck on the "Gong of Death" - one death every 6 seconds due to smoking in the world. (p/s: We strike every 10 minutes, meaning to say that there are 100 people died because of smoking every 10 minutes...Sad)

Our effort won't just stop here.
